Patreon As A Platform
You can read along using the audio above :)
Hi Everyone! I just launched my Patreon and you’re listening to the audio version of my first video. If you’d like to watch the video form of this post you can head over to patreon.com/meghantwombly
Basically, I’m going to be making marketing related content, freelance related content, personal branding related content. Whatever, whatever floats your boat whatever you will want to hear from me.
I’m sure many of you know that there are so many platforms out there for me to have chosen to dedicate my main content to I thought I would make a video explaining why I chose Patreon, why I think some other people might be interested in choosing Patreon and hopefully, hopefully you’ll stay here on this website with me as I get used to it myself.
I have a notebook here of all my notes - so I’m going to be going through that.
The first point I have written down is that:
With the creator economy in particular we’ve been seeing a lot of sharing other people’s ideas, other people’s videos, pictures, tweets - whatever it is, I don’t think that’s a bad thing! As long as you’re posting something publicly, it should be public in my opinion.
I like that Patreon gives creators the ability to have a little bit more control over where their content is shared.
My goal over the next year or couple of years is to become established in freelance digital marketing in my community. So, I thought Patreon would be an opportunity for me to introduce another revenue stream. Having another revenue stream will allow me to charge the people in my community what I want to charge them instead of what I have to charge them in order to meet my living expenses.
Now the third point I have here is probably the most important one!
So, I’ve been making videos for years now and I post them unlisted on Youtube and I share them with just my friends and family. This is something that I’ve been doing since I was in like… fifth grade when I made my first Sims music video. Since it’s something that I enjoy doing, I thought I might as well share it publicly (even though this is still kind of in a way private because of the paywall but that works for me!)
Patreon is supposed to be really good for artists who want control over where their art is going and since I’m hoping to work with creators and artists I wanted to have first hand experience with this platform, since I don’t really have experience with it. I wanted to try it out myself, see how I like it, how it works for me before I go and tell other people to try and use it.
I think the paywall on Patreon is enough of a barrier to entry where people who aren’t interested in watching this content aren’t going to watch it. I only really want to make content for people who want to watch my videos and who want to support me in this journey/career path that I’m on and I’m not really interested in having a giant audience. I would rather engage with the people who are already in my social circle, my network (if you want to call it that).
And finally,
That’s my last bullet point that I have written down. Patreon was made by a Youtube musician who wanted to help other artists to have freedom and control over the art they are creating so they don’t have to rely on certain video topics that are popular or follow ad guidelines that kind of restrict the content that you’re able to make. So, I think that’s a good mission!

Thank you again for listening (or reading) and as always, I would really love to hear your feedback on this format, or on my Patreon or anything else!
